The vision of a doctor, an agronomist and a pharmacist was....The creation of a business that would use the pharmacology of aromatic plants to create products whose ultimate goal will be to improve the quality of people's health and life! Thus, in 2005, the creation of a company different from the rest for the then Greek conditions began in the then Municipality of Mouriki in the Prefecture of Kozani. Hence her name!!!Which was not chosen by chance!

 The unit was founded in 2005 by a group of scientists as mentioned above, led by Mr. Stergios Tzimikas, a doctor by profession, and the agronomist, Mr. Dimitris Michailidis. These two people, having knowledge of aromatic plants, started the effort with a nursery in the area of Anarrachi, Ptolemaida.It started then in collaboration with ETHIAGE and the Department of Agriculture of the University of Athens. an experimental estate of 16 hectares in which 30 species of plants were planted for three years and in various ways to observe which way the best yield is achieved. At the beginning, secret desire was to yield 5-6 plants. In the process, however, it was a surprise that they performed all 30! After this experimental phase they decided to go ahead with the project and complete it with the creation of an innovative unit that will contain several production lines. Thus, in 2007, the construction of the factory began, which was completed in 2009. Then some experimental productions were carried out inside the factory.

Therefore, from 2005, when the company was founded, until 2009, it was active in the experimental cultivation of 30 species of aromatic and medicinal plants in six different ways, in order to acquire the required know-how for the optimal cultivation method of each plant.
 
Within 2010 he moved into production, setting up a modern vertically integrated unit, which has a still, extractors and mechanical production equipment.
 
From there on, after a thorough exploration of existing research and some studies prepared by the company in collaboration with Universities of the country, a development of codes and some herbal mixtures was made which went on the market. Some innovative products were also created with herbal extracts in organic sugar and organic honey. For 20 years, the company has specialized in the cultivation, production and processing of aromatic and medicinal plants, as well as products based on them (drugs, decoctions, beverages, food supplements, beverages, essential oils, extracts, feed supplements, cosmetics, etc. .) and are used for physical health and well-being.

The raw materials it uses are strictly Greek and are cultivated by trained farmers with the standards of integrated management, in selected areas in Central and Northern Greece. Its materials and products (herbs, essential oils, etc.) are created using completely natural processes with strict quality controls. Particular importance is given to the method, the time of collection and drying, maintenance and storage. Depending on the type of plant, we choose to collect among its following parts: leaves, flowers, roots, fruits, bulbs, when they are at the appropriate stage, in order to get the maximum of these properties. The drying is done in a natural way without direct exposure to the sun, with the result that they do not lose their aroma and color.

Our concern is therefore the production and supply of excellent quality raw materials and their processing products with the final recipient improving the quality of life and human health.
 
One of the new innovative activities of Dioscurides, is the production of innovative biofunctional drinks with herbal extracts homogenized in honey and carob honey, which have therapeutic properties (Winter beverage, Diet beverage, Serenity beverage, Knowledge beverage and Night beverage) .
 
The company's stated philosophy is to treat health problems, if possible, with natural herbal extracts. These herbs have been known for their action for centuries, which is scientifically documented by hundreds of university studies.
 
The extracts are produced with strict specifications using green methods and with modern innovative mechanical equipment. (ultrasound bath and pulsed electric waves).
 
Our dream, which is now in the realization phase, is to introduce the bioactive substances of the aromatic plants that we produce and process into food as well as in the field of plant protection and animal protection.In other words, the creation of certain foods, which, by taking them in the daily life of man, help him to improve his health. In nature, and especially in aromatic plants, there are bioactive substances that are beneficial for human health and it has been proven laboratory and clinically that their long-term use reduces morbidity and has a beneficial effect on cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease, and even various forms of cancer. Together with various Universities and Agencies of our country, we gradually started research in this area.
 
Biofunctional, or medicinal foods (nutraceuticals) are similar in appearance to other foods, they are consumed as part of the diet, but they help the normal functioning of the human body and reduce the possibility of chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, etc.). They are the future in nutrition because in addition to being energetic and healthy, they can act preventively in maintaining good health and in some cases therapeutic for the body.
 
Shortly before our idea was perfected, a part of the investigations of the research program was presented:

For the implementation of the program, the following collaborated: the University of Western Macedonia, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the University of Thessaly, ELGO - DIMITRA (Department of Beekeeping) and the company DIOSCURIDES IKE. It is the new project of our company for the creation of products related to healthy nutrition, animal protection and plant protection with green, human-friendly methods.
 
After laboratory research, with the Faculty of Pharmacy of the AUTH and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ioannina 4 years ago, we managed to isolate some of the bioactive substances found in essential aromatic plants. Then, with the ENBIOS program, it was studied how we will be able to introduce them into food, plant protection and animal protection, as well as the effects of this introduction in the human, plant and animal chain.
 
As far as biofunctional foods are concerned:
 
In this part, the final goal is to limit oxidative stress in the human body through biofunctional foods.
Oxidative stress is a condition that occurs when there is an excess of free radicals in the cells of the body. Oxygen is necessary for all higher living organisms because it allows the production of energy from organic matter. The result of this internal combustion process in the body, in addition to the production of energy, is the creation of by-products called oxygen free radicals.Oxygen free radicals can come either from the normal functioning of the body, or from exposure to environmental pollutants such as exhaust gases and cigarette smoke, alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, exposure to ionizing radiation, the presence of infections and the use certain medicines. To some extent the organism uses them for its defense (eg to destroy some bacteria). Under normal conditions, the body keeps these roots in very close control and balance. When this balance is disturbed, we have what we call oxidative stress.When this loss of control of free radicals by the body occurs, they attack its healthy cells, oxidizing and destroying them, causing damage to fatty tissue, DNA and proteins of the body. Proteins, lipids and DNA make up a large part of the body, so damage to these substances can lead to various diseases.Oxidative stress has been found to be associated with the onset or worsening of diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes mellitus, infertility, osteoporosis, bronchial asthma, kidney disease, of the thyroid gland and premature aging.
 
In order to deal with oxidative stress, the only existing way so far is to increase the levels of antioxidants in the body and reduce the formation of free radicals. Herbs which are rich in antioxidants and polyphenols (flavonoids, lycopene, anthocyanins) contribute greatly to the increase of antioxidant levels in the body.Herbal extracts have an even higher percentage of antioxidants compared to herbs! This was the purpose of the program! To find the most suitable combination of herbal extract mixture that will contribute the most to the treatment of oxidative stress and to put this mixture into various foods so that to be even more beneficial for the human body.

Initially, a research was carried out by DIOSCURIDES in collaboration with the Department of Food of the University of Athens and the Chemical Engineers of the University of Western Macedonia, who made measurements on the extracts of 50-60 plants for the percentage of polyphenols in them. These measurements were also made in mixtures between plants, resulting in the most ideal mixture in terms of the required polyphenols so that oxidative stress can be treated. The Food Department of the University of Athens confirmed that the resulting substance could be used in any food.

Thus, the idea for the chocolate appeared, where with the help of the "Roxani" Confectionery, it was produced with the addition of the mixture. Subsequently, the chocolate bar was sent to laboratories in Athens and it was certified that it was suitable for human consumption, without the existence of harmful substances.The next step was the contact and cooperation with the Nephrology Clinic of the Bodosakeios Hospital of Ptolemaida. The reason for choosing to test the product there has to do with kidney patients, whose body shows a greatly increased oxidative stress, making complications more dangerous for them, and with the excellent training of the staff in that department. With consent of the patients, who agreed to participate in the research, were given a chocolate bar on a daily basis for 3 months. Before the start of the research, examinations and measurements of oxidative stress were made in the patients so that they could be compared with those after the end of the quarter. were facing such problems. Most important of all, in people who had vascular stiffness, it not only did not continue to increase, but actually had a significant contribution to its regression.
 
This philosophy of his is not only limited to humans and the benefits for specific diseases, but also to how it will be combined with plant protection and the livestock of the place, for the production of food more friendly to humans.

Regarding plant protection:
 
Chemicals currently used for plant protection pass into the human body causing problems (eg cancer). There are substances in the medicinal plants that using them, in sprinkling, are not harmful to the body as they do not contain chemicals.This is still in the experimental stage, but very soon we will have formulations, which will be used fearlessly by farmers, to produce their products without the use of pesticides. After studies, formulations were created in an experimental stage with which farmers can sprinkle and the products are immediately ready for consumption, without risk to human health.The University of Thessaly helped significantly in this and the preparations that emerged were the result of 3-4 years of work and research in collaboration with the Dioscurides unit.

Regarding animal protection:
 
In the area of livestock, it is known that the European Union, in order to protect people and increase resistance to viruses, has banned the administration of antibiotics to animals. This ban created morbidity problems for them. Was there a solution from nature? We believed it existed! For this reason we succeeded and isolated some substances, which helped to reduce the morbidity of animals by 80%. Already, extracts of Greek herbs are used in animal feed mixtures improving the physical health of animals, the quality of meat and milk production . Thus, the use of antibiotic drugs for animal diseases is greatly reduced.In addition to herbal extracts in animal feed, we managed, in collaboration with the Agricultural School of the University of Athens, to create herbal extracts for bee feed, dealing to a significant extent with nosemiasis, an infectious disease that is destroying Greek beekeeping. The product - he noted - is already on the market, offering the possibility to beekeepers not only to save their bees but at the same time to increase their production.By putting one liter of medicinal plants in one ton of animal feed, animal morbidity is reduced and the products produced by the animals are also increased. Thus the antioxidant activity and quality are improved so the chicken, egg, milk are better.

Our group's goal is to make our diet healthier, both with biofunctional foods and through plant-animal-protection for the production of food that is more human-friendly. In an era where the ready, the fast have dominated and that these entail for our health, - as a result we have an "invasion" of the metabolic syndrome, many cardiovascular diseases, many strokes, many diabetic patients, increased incidences of cancer and other serious diseases - we strive to harness the beneficial properties of herbs and aromatic plants to improve our quality of life and health!
